Data Catalog

A data catalog is a detailed inventory of an organization’s data assets. This includes the structure, relationships, and metadata. It promotes data discovery, understanding, and trust that enables informed decision-making. With governance, data catalogs ensure data quality and compliance and make data accessible, comprehensible, and aligned with policies and regulations.

UNCG utilizes Data Cookbook as the central hub for all data governance and stewardship efforts. It serves as the authoritative source where metadata about institutional data assets is defined, cataloged, and managed. Want to learn more? Training opportunities will be available soon.

Like a library catalog, a Data Catalog provides a record that describes a data asset (such as a report or business term). A patron may use the library’s catalog to search for a book by title, author, or key terms that identify the book’s availability, format, or other information about the book, as well as discovering similar materials linked to the record by subject headings or publisher information.

A user of a Data Catalog can similarly locate information about data assets, such as the name, description or definition, data lineage, ownership, and relations to other assets. Such information can aid in a deeper understanding of the asset and also identify other assets the user might have need of. Much like the library’s catalog, a Data Catalog is a single source for discovering information resources (i.e., data assets), information about those resources, and how to access them and similar materials.

Collection Develpoment Guidelines

The collection development guidelines are a statement of the principles used by UNCG Enterprise Data Governance (EDG) in the acquisition, criteria, and maintenance of metadata of UNC Greensboro (UNCG) data assets. The guidelines are used in providing consistency among those responsible for developing the collection and in communicating EDG policies to administration, faculty, staff, and other interested persons.
