The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education and is located within the United States Department of Education. The NCES requires the annual reporting of data from universities nationwide. The NCES gathers and disseminates these data using the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a web-based data collection tool.
The Common Data Set (CDS) is created from set data items and definitions. These items were developed so that comparisons of standard information could be made across colleges and universities. Development of the CDS standard was driven by data providers in the higher education community and publishers of information about colleges and universities.
