Office of Institutional Research UNCG ProfileHistory/Location: The University of North Carolina at Greensboros Carnegie Classification is as a Doctoral University I. The University was established in 1891 and became coeducational in 1963. The 190-acre campus is located 1 mile from the center of Greensboro, a city of 203,342. The Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of approximately 1,161,397. (top) Academic Schools/Programs and Degrees: Arts and Sciences; Business and Economics; Education; Health and Human Performance; Human Environmental Sciences; Music; Nursing; and Graduate School. UNCG offers over 100 undergraduate, 62 masters and 15 doctoral programs. In 1997-98 UNCG awarded 1,699 bachelor's, 661 master's and 87 doctoral degrees. Doctoral degrees were awarded in English, Psychology, Education, Human Environmental Sciences, Exercise and Sports Science, and Music. (top) Enrollment: Fall 1998 headcount enrollment, (excluding extension) was 12,700 (11,023 FTE), including 10,049 (9,091 FTE) undergraduates and 2,651 (1,932 FTE) graduate students. 8,151 (81%) of undergraduate and 915 (35%) of graduate students were enrolled on a full-time basis. 32% of undergraduate students were male. 10% of undergraduate and 13% of graduate students are from out-of-state. 17% of undergraduate and 9% of graduate students are African-American. 33% of undergraduate students live in residence halls. (top) Admissions/Retention: 1,826 Freshmen and 1,291 Transfers enrolled for the first-time in Fall 1998. 73% of freshman applicants were accepted and 28% enrolled. The average SAT score for enrolled freshmen was 1029. Range of the middle 50% for SAT scores was 460-570 for Verbal and 460-570 for Math. Seventy-four percent of Fall 1997 Freshmen returned in Fall 1998, and 50% of freshmen graduated within six years.
