1998-99 Fact Book

UNCG Programs of Study

The following pages provide a complete inventory of the areas of study which may be pursued at UNCG as of the start of the 1998-99 academic year. The format provided permits one to translate or "crosswalk" UNCG's own internal system of coding majors using the Area of Study (AOS) Codes to the Academic Program Inventory (API) Codes utilized by UNC General Administration, and to the Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) Codes used by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). CIP codes are also utilized by UNCG in external data exchanges with "peer" institutions and in reporting data to various higher education professional associations.

The Area of Study (AOS) codes noted in the first column of the accompanying listings are unique to UNCG. A complete listing of undergraduate programs is followed by a complete listing of graduate programs. In each case, programs are arranged alphabetically by department within the College of Arts and Sciences or the appropriate School. Within a department, programs are arranged by AOS code. Bold type indicates programs that are new or have been changed in some way since last year. In most cases the change is in the course description only. Italic type indicates a program that is currently inactive or suspended. It is possible that programs currently inactive may have enrollment or graduates who started the program earlier.

The first digit of each four digit AOS code distinguishes Undergraduate (U) from Graduate (G) programs. Accompanying each four digit AOS code is a UNCG School and Departmental unit code, a brief program description field, and fields which indicate the UNCG academic degree earned upon program completion, as well as the alphabetic UNCG Major code. For those programs that lead to teacher certification, the appropriate level of teacher certification is also indicated. "A" and "G" indicate the corresponding State Department of Public Instruction professional certification levels. "C" indicates a Sixth Year certificate and "T" a doctoral certificate. Programs which may or may not lead to certification such as a B.A. degree in Biology have separate AOS codes used to distinguish programs where teacher certification intent is possible (U119) from programs which do not lead to certification (U117). This distinction is especially important in reporting teacher education enrollment or productivity data to UNC General Administration (GA) and the State Department of Public Instruction.

The last three columns of the accompanying listings show the relationship of each UNCG program to UNC General Administration's Academic Program Inventory (API) for UNC Institutions and the nationally used Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) published by the National Center for Education Statistics. GA's descriptive Track Titles from the Academic Program Inventory for UNCG are also displayed. The API codes correspond to the HEGIS codes formerly used nationally by the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). Nationally, the HEGIS taxonomy has been replaced by the CIP taxonomy, which uses six digits and is more inclusive. The crosswalks from HEGIS/API coding to CIP coding were done at General Administration to be consistent across all sixteen UNC campuses and generally follow the crosswalk suggested by NCES.
